Many of our senior researchers will join the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society CIES 2018, as speakers, chairs and discussants. The event, from March 25 to 29 de marzo in Ciudad de México, will address the theme of “Re-Mapping Global Education: South-North Dialogue.”

Attendees have been called to reflect on the divisions that are built into our academic field between developed and developing nations and to shift the starting point of research to the global South. This involves disrupting hierarchies of knowledge production and listening to the voices and actors that have historically been left out of international and comparative education research.

On March 27, as part as the panel  Globalization and School SegregationMaría Balarin, together with Aurora Escudero, will discuss “The ungoverned education market and the deepening of socioeconomic school segregation in Perú”.

On March 28, Juan León will chair the panel Unequal Educational Opportunities and Unjust Inequalities of Outcomes: Lessons from Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam on Equity in Education. At the same session, Santiago Cueto will share “Inequalities in educational opportunities and outcomes in secondary schools in Peru”.

Later, as part as the panel Privatization, Globalization, and Marginalization: The Implications of PPPs for Global Education Reform and Marginalized PopulationsMaría Balarin will discuss “All LFPS are not created equal: The configuration of the lowfee private school sector in Peru”. This study has been conducted together with Clara Fontdevila and Paola Marius, from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and María Fernanda Rodríguez.

Also, Patricia Arregui will be discussant of the panel The Global South and North in Contemporary Comparative Scholarship on Achievement Tests: Insights from new maps and comparisons.
