Cueto, S., Felipe, C. y León, J. (2019). Venciendo la adversidad: trayectorias educativas de estudiantes pobres en zonas rurales del Perú. Lima: GRADE. Documentos de Investigación, 110.

The Peruvian education system is characterized by high levels of access, low levels of learning and high inequality. There are several reasons why some students access a high level of education and learning, while others do not. In general, it can be affirmed that there is a connection between socioeconomic characteristics and student performance, and that schools can intervene to obtain better results than one would expect.

Using longitudinal data from Young Lives Peru, this study aims to understand why some students born in a context of poverty in rural areas achieve better educational results than their peers at age 15. It is found that the students who migrate from rural to urban areas are the ones who improve their scores the most. Although the possible explanations are diverse, we suggest that those with a clearer effect are related to improving the educational opportunities of rural school students.
