Presentation

This project focuses on the characterization of the relation between race/ethnicity, discrimination, poverty, exclusion and health in Peru.
Peruvian society has been historically signed by high levels of poverty and inequality which have been sustained in part by systematic mechanisms of exclusion of the majority of population with indigenous ethnic origins. Recent studies emphasize the existence of different discriminatory mechanisms to perpetuate the unfavorable situation of different ethnic/racial groups in Peru, not only for those with Andean origin but also for those coming from Afro-Peruvian groups and members of different Amazonian ethnos from the Peruvian Amazon. However, there are still significant holes in our knowledge about the nature of the health ethnic gap, as well as about the mechanisms by which ethnic-racial discrimination operates within health sectors and society as a whole. By filling this gaps we will be in better conditions to stop or improve the sources of discrimination and inequity.

This research study combines both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and intends to contribute with such literature in at least three aspects: (i) measure the magnitude of ethnic-racial breach associated to the access to health services and health financing services by using new ethnic-racial indicators recently available in household databases within national scope; (ii) identify key determinants of such ethnic-racial breach in health to properly establish the direct effects of ethnics origins in socio-economic disadvantages, low education, etc.; (iii) identify the way this different ethnic-racial groups suffer and face discrimination in different sceneries, specially in health establishments, as well as to explore links between the exposure to discrimination and its corresponding health status.
