Presentation

The aim of the project is to apply the nexus approach to the sustainable use of water, food, energy and the environment. It seeks to overcome the fragmented approach in understanding and in water management policies, normally considered in isolation and without taking into account the interrelations between sectors, markets and institutions, and without adequately evaluating externalities and synergies.

The study focuses on two countries: Peru and Ecuador, and two specific areas: the Ica Valley in Peru and the Santa Elena Valley in Guayas, Ecuador. In both case studies there is a multisectoral use of water, in a context of high scarcity and conflicts over current and future use.

The study seeks to generate evidence on the shared use of water, and to model the interactions among the different users in order to generate academic products and contributions to public policies in both countries. It is also considered a training program in the research processes developed aimed at officials and the academic sector. The study is multidisciplinary in nature, and with the participation of stakeholders related to water management in both countries.

The study also includes the University of Cranfield (UK), the University of Exteter (UK), the Catholic University of Chile and the Polytechnic University of Quito.
