Presentation

From 2008 to 2010, GRADE carried out a series of studies to design a system to monitor the (micro) economic changes in the households of the areas of influence of the mining Project La Granja (district of Querocoto, province of Chota, Cajamarca).  The studies analyzed the main factors that determine the local economy dynamics, focusing on the inflationary processes (estimating a price index based on a basic consumer basket) and the performance of another type of relevant factors, such as the creation of businesses, the transportation market, the dynamics of local fairs, the dynamics of farming wages and the changes in production and consumption patterns.

On this occasion, by assignment received from Rio Tinto, the mining company that operates the project, efforts continue to construct a system to monitor social and economic changes induced by the presence of the project, with three main goals:  a) identify and describe social changes (their path and intensity); b) identify the synergies between the different types of social changes; and c) identify the influence of the mining project in such changes (degree of influence).

The scope of the research covers a set of theme areas and population spaces beyond the simple district area of Querocoto.  The research work started in May and is expected to be completed next December 2013.
