An extensive literature suggests that investments in early stages of the life cycle have long-term implications on accumulated human capital, which in turn has effects on the performance of individuals in the labour market. This paper explores the impact of the conditional cash transfer programme Juntos on the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age. To this end, two methodologies are applied: (a) household matching based on observable characteristics and double-difference matching; and, (b) estimations with district and maternal fixed effects. The results suggest that the programme would have reduced the incidence of extreme chronic malnutrition. Also, conditional on being enrolled in the programme, positive effects are detected depending on the time of exposure to the programme for those children born in households with relatively well-educated mothers.
