Activists, researchers, professors, representatives of the government, and afrodescendant and indigenous organizations will discuss and generate recommendations to improve the gathering of census information with an ethnic ratial approach.

The 2017 Population and Housing Census incorporated the variable of ethnic self-identification. With this, Peru made a qualitative leap in the collection of disaggregated statistical information with an ethnic-racial approach. This information must contribute to an adequate State intervention in the populations that have systematically demanded the recognition and guarantee of their fundamental rights.

The first results of the census reveal a new configuration of the national reality. One of its main contributions is that, for the first time, census statistics are available on the Afro-Peruvian population. This progress is at the same time a challenge: there is still a need to improve the quality of the collection of statistical information with an ethnic-racial approach, which incorporates the voices, recommendations and demands of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

Faced with this scenario, the seminar “The challenges of ethnic self-identification: reflections after the census” is configured as a space for debate and exchange on the diverse and multidisciplinary readings of the results of the census. It seeks to share lessons learned and lessons learned that contribute to the improvement of information gathering with ethnic racial focus, as well as to guarantee the fundamental rights and valuation of ethnical cultural diversities in the country.

The seminar is an initiative of the Group for the Analysis for Development (GRADE), the Ministry of Cultura, el National Institute for Statistics and IT (INEI) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Ford Foundation supports the event.
