Our Research Director and Senior Researcher María Balarin will be joining the Comparative & International Education Society (CIES) 2022 Conference. The CIES 2022 theme “Illuminating the Power of Idea/lism: elevating ourselves in time, place and possibility” arises from the intersection of two immutable realities of our time and the impact both are having on the field of comparative and international education. The first is the global experience with the COVID-19 pandemic. The second is the rise of nativism and fundamentalism representing both ideological rigidity and political divisiveness. The CIES 2022 theme seeks to find ways to address these challenges by bringing forward new ideas with a sense of idealism in the work we do as educationists.

On Thursday 21, María will be a speaker at two CIES 2022 sessions: the Book launch: “Examining Educational Policy in Latin America. Comprehensive Insights into Contemporary Reform” (3:00-4:30 pm) and the panel “Political Economy Research to Improve Systems of Education: Insights from the RISE Program and Related Projects” (10:00-11:30 am).

On regards of the book launch, the publication aims to map the educational policies that were implemented in the region in this significant and intense period. This book offers a critical and reflexive analysis of the different educational policies implemented between 2000 and 2020. The main theoretical framework aims to unveil policy discourses, changing ideologies and identities, and educational reforms enacted in the realm of the classrooms. Together with María, Axel Rivas (Universidad de San Andrés), Antoni Verger (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona), Gustavo E Fischman (Arizona State University), María Belen Sánchez (Universidad de San Andrés) and Jorge G Baxter (Universidad de Los Andes) are also panelists.

On regards of the second session, the panel presents work from researchers associated with the RISE program effort, including applications of the analytical framework and applications in four RISE countries (India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Nigeria.) Taken together the papers explore a) the applicability of the emerging RISE political economy work to other country experiences, as well as b) key specific aspects of the politics of learning, such as decentralization, service delivery approaches, and unity of purpose. Together with María, the panel includes Alec Gershberg (University of Pennsylvania), Soufia Siddiqi (Lahore University of Management Sciences), Andrew James Rosser (University of Melbourne), Hania Sobhy (Independiente) and Shazmeneh Durrani (University of Pennsylvania).
