Grupo Sofía held the launch of its book “Inequality in academia: women in the Peruvian social sciences”, edited by Lorena Alcázar and María Balarin. The book includes chapters of researchers Patricia Ames, Norma Correa, Erika Busse, Roxana Barrantes, Patricia Ruiz-Bravo, Yamilé Guibert, Andrea Román, Aurora Escudero, Karen Espinoza and María Fernanda Rodríguez. They present rigorous evidence, until now not available, which reveals the disparities between men and women with a professional career in the social sciences in terms of salaries, positions reached and participation in spaces of public and academic debate; and explore complementary edges that explain this situation. The studies also address the experiences of academics from several generations, located in different types of institutions (public, private, from Lima and other provinces) and analyze in particular the situation of women in the economics career and the experiences of women young boys. Following the proactive spirit of Grupo Sofía, the book concludes with a chapter that examines gender equality policy models.

The book has been made possible thanks to the support of GRADE, PUCP, IEP, UP, the generous contribution of IDRC’s Think Tank Initiative, and especially to the volunteer efforts of the academics and researchers of Grupo Sofía Promoter Team.

Grupo Sofía is a network of professional women of the social sciences whose mission is to promote equal opportunities for women researchers in the social sciences in Peru, in areas such as academic training, progression in professional career and knowledge production, as well as for their participation in spaces for debate and policy formulation
