This study analyses the dynamics of this return migration to rural areas during 2020 using census data and records of returnee arrivals, and then interviews more than 3,000 households in 19 provinces and 77 districts with the largest flows. Based on this information, we estimate that around a quarter of a million people, mostly young single people with completed secondary education and recent emigrants, have returned to their rural places of origin with the intention of staying permanently.
