Presentation

The aim of this study was to analyze the main barriers and opportunities faced by young people living in vulnerable urban contexts in the city of Lima in their transition process to adult life. The study used a participatory-qualitative design to provide a detailed account of the way in precarity influences young people’s access to opportunities, especially to educational credentials and quality jobs. The study analyses the way in which different factors, such as the degree of the precariousness of the local context, social capital, and family characteristics, aggregate and interact in different ways creating different trajectories, some more favorable than others. Differentiated factors were distinguished by gender, such as the domestic and care burden in the case of women and the economic burden in the case of men.
