GReCEST promotes a research agenda on economic structural transformation, a key issue for poverty reduction, job creation, industrial modernization and economic diversification for sustainable and inclusive growth. Its constitution marks the beginning of the adoption of measures to foster new ideas, collaboration, and achievement of results for development, through South-South cooperation.

The initiative is one of the pillars of the Think Tank Network Global Coalition for South-South Cooperation (GTTN), which has the support of the United Nations Development Program and the Office of the United Nations for South-South Cooperation.
