International Seminar – Towards 2017 census. Challenges of self identification

The Group for the Analysis of Development (GRADE), the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the National Institute of Statistics and Information (INEI) in Peru are jointly organizing the International Seminar – Towards 2017 census. Challenges of self identification, which will be held on September 21st to 22nd, 2016.  The event aims to produce knowledge about statistical visibility in census and the national statistical system in Peru.  It is organize according to the objectives of the Inter-agency Technical Commitee for Statistics of Ethnicity (Comité Técnico Interinstitucional sobre Estadísticas de Etnicidad – CTIEE), on the sidelines of its strategy line for policy engagement and training.  It is aimed to policy makers, researchers, international cooperation agents and opinion leaders.

The objectives of the event are:

  • Public agents and servants to know about the execution of the upcoming population and housing census and to have a positive standing regarding the inclusion of a ethnic self-identification variable.
  • To identify the progress and tensions of the discussion on including a ethnic self-identification variable in censuses and surveys.
  • To recognize the progress of studies on indigenous and afro-Peruvian people that have included the ratial-ethnic issue.
  • To review existing experiences regarding awareness campaings on population and housing censuses in other Latin America countries.
